What You Need To Know About Speed Humps
Applications for Speed Hump Installation or Removal can be
obtained from the City of St. Augustine Public Works Department on the 4th floor
of Lobby B in the City Hall/Lightner Museum Complex located at 75 King
Street. Phone: 904-825-1040
At least five residents or businesses located within 200 feet either side of the
proposed location of the Speed Hump must sign the application. If the City
accepts the application the affected neighborhood will be surveyed by
mail. Two thirds of the respondents must be in favor of the installation.
General Information.
Speed Humps are designed to slow traffic on residential
streets. Unlike the speed bumps in parking lots (like Albertson's
Riverside Mall) speed humps can be driven over at about twenty mph without
"significant driver discomfort." However, driving over a speed
hump at speeds in excess of 20 mph jolts the vehicle.
Speed Humps are between 12 and 22 feet long, they
cannot be placed on curves, hills (?), brick streets, within 30 feet of an
intersection, or less than 200 feet apart. They cannot be within 8 feet of
a driveway, adjacent to a fire hydrant or over a manhole.
Disadvantages. (From a list provided by the Dept. of Public
Works)
Increased noise levels as vehicles traverse speed humps day
and night
Drivers may use sidewalks or front yards to avoid speed humps
Street sweeping truck is not used at speed hump locations
Impaired drainage could lead to street flooding
Some may find required street signs and pavement striping
unattractive.
There are currently two Speed Humps in operation in Saint Augustine. One in at Nelmar Terrace and the other is near The Conch House on Anastasia Island.
